Books and Society
From Ancient Greece to contemporary America, writers have used books to present the issues of the day. Jon Plaut will speak on "Books and Society". Based on a course he's currently teaching at Rutgers-OLLI-RU, Mr. Plaut will explore some of these issues, including women?s status, freedom and existentialism, social responsibility, and institutional racism?as reflected in works such as Homer's "Odyssey", "A Room of Her Own", "Romeo and Juliet", and National Book Award winner "Between the World and Me". The program is free and all are welcome. Jon Plaut has both engineering and law degrees. He was a presidential appointee who served Presidents Clinton and Bush on the NAFTA Commission, and was chair of the NAFTA Public Advisory Committee. He served as President of the Board of Trustees of the Summit Free Public Library. He is president of Global Learning, Inc., and has taught at Rutgers-OLLI-RU for a number of years.
